World Mental Health Day is Saturday, October 10, 2020. On this day, mental health treatment centers, experts, organizations, and communities come together to celebrate successes in treatment and to create more awareness for mental disorders and related issues. The theme for World Mental Health Day 2020 is Mental Health for All: Greater Investment – Greater Success.

The focus of this event is to reinforce the belief that mental health treatment is a human right. As such, it should be available to all. Quality access to healthcare should be at the core of universal health coverage. In addition, the need for more mental health resources, treatment, and research is urgent.

Why Is World Mental Health Day Important?

Millions of Americans are currently living with some form of mild to severe mental disorder. Mental health conditions can lead to a variety of problems, such as:

  • Drug and alcohol addiction
  • Eating disorders
  • Medical issues and terminal health conditions
  • High suicide rates
  • High crime rates
  • Divorce and abuse in families

Yet, with all of the problems associated with mental health conditions, the widespread stigma toward mental health has not improved.

As a result, the funding and support needed for professional mental health treatment are still in short supply. Addiction treatment centers often lack the funding, equipment, staff, and facilities they need to adequately treat clients who suffer from drug and alcohol addiction, as well as depression, anxiety, PTSD, borderline personality disorder, bipolar disorder, and ADHD.

World Mental Health Day is important because it creates greater awareness and empathy for individuals, families, and communities that suffer from mental disorders. When people see firsthand the destruction that mental health conditions cause in the lives of so many people, they are more willing to invest in treatment and care.

How You Can Help with World Mental Health Day 2020

The World Mental Health Day initiative allows you and others to get involved and make a difference. Even in the midst of the current COVID-19 pandemic, there are still opportunities to show your support for Mental Health Awareness.

Donate

Most treatment centers and health organizations are underfunded when it comes to treating those with mental disorders. Yet, many of them continue to reach out to the community and corporate world for financial support. One of the ways that you can help these organizations is to donate. Your donations go a long way in helping treatment centers provide the highest level of care for their clients.

Participate

Another way to help out during World Mental Health Day is to find activities and events that are going on in the Atlanta, Georgia area. Contact a local alcohol or drug addiction treatment center to find out what events they are sponsoring this year. You may also want to research other mental health organizations to find out what events they are sponsoring this year.

Intervene

Do you know someone who has an addiction to drugs or alcohol? Or do you know someone who is suffering from a mental health disorder? If so, now is your chance to make a difference in their lives.
